Sorbitol is a vegetable, hexavalent sugar alcohol. The white, odorless powder is very soluble in water and heat stable. Sorbitol is an alternative to glycerin as a humectant. Although it is not as hygroscopic and thus moisture-binding as glycerin, it is not as "sticky" at higher concentrations. Like glycerin, sorbitol is very well tolerated by the skin and, in surfactant formulations (shampoos, shower gels), mitigates its degreasing effect.
