The clear, characteristically smelling liquid is obtained by fermenting biomass. The liquid is then concentrated to an alcohol content of 96% by distillation.
 
Decisive for its use in cosmetics is its very good properties as a solvent and preservative. About 12-20% alcohol in the water phase is sufficient for good preservation results. 
 
Ethanol is also suitable for cleaning and disinfecting stirring utensils. For this purpose, it should be diluted with water to 80% to achieve optimum disinfection.
